Why your water bill keeps climbing
From 1 July 2026, Unitywater increased the average combined water and wastewater bill by 1.6 per cent, about $28 a year. Water charges themselves are frozen at last year’s rates. The increase applies to wastewater only.
On its own, $28 does not sound like much. But Unitywater’s own figures put the average combined household bill at around $1,750 a year already, and that number only moves in one direction. For most Sunshine Coast households, the bigger cost is not the annual increase. It is the water disappearing through fixtures nobody has checked in years.Where the real water waste is hiding
- A running toilet can waste more than 5,000 litres a day
- Undetected leaks can waste over 2,000 litres a day, often with no visible sign
- Worn tap washers and old showerheads use far more water than modern, water efficient fixtures
- Most of it goes unnoticed until the next bill arrives
A Water Efficiency Check identifies where the opportunities for water savings are. Combine it with an inspection, and we can also pinpoint the leaks and losses actually costing you money.

Who actually needs this
Homeowners
- Lower the amount you are paying for water every quarter, catch a hidden leak before it turns into a callout, and get ahead of fixtures that are already on their way out.
Landlords and property managers
- Under Queensland tenancy law, you can only pass on water usage charges to a tenant if the property is individually metered, your lease says the tenant pays for water, and the property meets the water efficiency standards set for Queensland rental properties (9 litres/minute max for taps and showerheads, dual flush toilets within set limits). If your property does not meet that standard, you cover the water usage costs yourself, not your tenant.
A Water Efficiency Certificate from a licensed plumber is how you prove compliance if it is ever questioned.
This is general information, not legal advice. Speak with your property manager or the Residential Tenancies Authority about your specific obligations.
Water Efficiency Check FAQ
What is a Water Efficiency Certificate?
- It is a document from a licensed plumber confirming your taps, showerheads and toilets meet the flow rate and flush standards set for Queensland rental properties. Landlords need one to legally charge tenants for water usage.
Do I need one as a landlord?
- If you want to charge a tenant for water usage in Queensland, yes. Without it, you are required to cover water usage costs yourself, even if your lease says the tenant pays.
How much water could I actually be wasting?
- It varies, but Unitywater notes that some leaks alone waste more than 2,000 litres a day. A running toilet can waste more again.
How long does a Water Efficiency Check take?
- For a typical home, most checks are completed in under an hour.
